I feel obligated to tell these merchants why I don't buy from them, but I cannot save the world and so here is my snippet of information to anyone who wishes to read it.
Let's talk about simple stuff like legal, accounting and other fees I have to pay here and there; perhaps a graphic designer or two, etc. etc.
Anyone with a PayPal account can offer credit card payment options to anyone without one. The Merchant Services tab on the PayPal menu (logged in of course) offers a handy "Send Invoice" option that lets you request money in the form of a service invoice in very much the same way as the "Request Money" tab. This invoice can be emailed and paid by credit card without the need and requirement to sign up for a PayPal account. When you send out this email the recipient can in fact pay you with a credit card and no PayPal account at all.
Furthermore, in a matter of minutes, you can create simple and fully customized buttons for your static web pages that permit anyone to pay for your goods or services without a PayPal account as well. For frequent types of payment requests, you can create virtual "invoice" templates to make these money requests more professional-looking.
Alternatively, you can discover Google Checkout (by Googling "Google Checkout") and you will be presented with a very similar set of lighting-fast tools to create payment buttons or send email invoices to your customers or clients.
Despite the emotional barriers to entry by non-techie type folks, these systems require virtually no training and are super easy to use. I truly believe anyone (I mean ANYONE) who wants to receive money from someone else; should be using one or both of these tools to get paid.
For the small-time merchant with a website, you can take this one step further and add these payment options to a static website. There is no need for a programmer, you just need to embed some little snippet of code into your site. Although you never have to embed anything if you are just wanting to get paid for services...just use the email invoice option, this bit of code can help small organizations, nonprofits, home-based sellers...anyone put payment options on their site.
If you are an online shopper like me, you probably already have the tools at your disposal since you can use the same PayPal account and/or Google login to manage your payment requests and handle these online funds.
Since both PayPal and Google offer you a quick way to deposit these funds directly to the bank account of your choice, there is really no reason that everyone in business can't offer these methods of payments immediately.
I recall one day when I was trying hard to collect a past due invoice from a customer and after about three of the "check's in the mail" remarks, I asked if they would be able to pay with a credit card and one email later, I was paid in under five minutes.
There is a reason these services are popular and despite any horror stories you may hear...as long as you don't reply to any of those bogus spams asking you to confirm your account; you should never have to worry about fraud.
